AKOYA PEARLS
As the symbol of the classic strand of white pearls, the Akoya pearl never goes out of style. Akoya pearls are the most popular pearls and are also the most well-known Saltwater Pearls. They come from Japan, China and most recently, Vietnam. They are cultivated in the Akoya pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata martensii.
FRESHWATER PEARLS
Freshwater pearls are cultured pearls, grown in lakes and rivers. Most Freshwater pearls are white and resemble Akoya pearls, but they also produce a variety of pastel shades, including pink, lilac and peach.
TAHITIAN PEARLS
Tahitian pearls, frequently referred to as black pearls, are highly valued because of their rarity; the culturing process for them dictates a smaller volume output and they can never be mass-produced because, in common with most sea pearls, the oyster can only be nucleated with one pearl at a time, while freshwater mussels are capable of multiple pearl implants. Black pearls are very rarely black: they are usually shades of green, purple, aubergine, blue, grey, silver or peacock (a mix of several shades, like a peacock’s feather).
